This publication is intended for resource managers to explore current knowledge and practice in non-timber forest product management, including both inventory and compatible management of NTFP values with timber values. By providing a theoretical overview of compatible management, and specific examples of ways to incorporate non-timber forest products into conventionally used inventories and forest management in British Columbia, this publication seeks to increase awareness, stimulate imagination, and narrow the communication gap between the timber and non-timber sectors.
This report was produced through collaboration between the Centre for Non-Timber Resources at Royal Roads University and the Canadian Model Forest Program. Two workshops were held in British Columbia – a coastal version in Port Hardy in March, 2005 and an interior version in Prince George in November, 2005. The resulting publication was developed jointly by the speakers, the participants and by other experts in the forestry, non-timber forest product and inventory sectors.
